One Fieldwork, Ten Films — Documenting Cornish Heritage

REVIVE is a European consortium revitalising endangered languages and intangible heritage — starting with Cornish. With LOBA producing and coordinating, I travelled to Cornwall for one fieldwork trip that became ten documentary-style films: bards of Gorsedh Kernow, a male voice choir in a Methodist chapel, a language weekend in Truro, quarrying history — filmed on the move, gimbal in hand, with the drone up over the heritage sites.

Overview

REVIVE — Revitalising Endangered Languages and Intangible Heritage in Europe — works with two focus communities: Cornish in the UK and Griko in southern Italy. For the Cornish fieldwork, LOBA brought me in to film it with a documentary approach — close to the people, the places and the process.

The interviews across the films were produced and coordinated by LOBA — my job was to keep the camera moving and the light right, adapting fast from chapel to classroom to clifftop, gimbal in hand, drone up at the heritage sites. On one film — the behind-the-scenes of the immersive audio-visual recording with NowHere Media and StoryLab — I also guided the conversation from behind the camera, a detail the client singled out.

That is the consortium logic REVIVE runs on: document once, disseminate everywhere. Ten films for the project’s channels, plus a stream of Instagram content pulled from the same footage. All of it was delivered to LOBA for their edit — aligned through requirement meetings and constant touchpoints, so what I filmed matched exactly what their editors needed. Their production and coordination let me focus on what I do best: filming.
